The New Zealand education industry has witnessed a rebound. Enrolments of international students are up 26% in 2024 compared to the previous year. It is a notable step towards recovery for the country after global disruptions due to the pandemic. The credit for this growth goes to local support; a variety of educational opportunities and a reputation for high-quality instruction in a friendly environment have all been credited with this growth.
As a leading study abroad consultancy in India, the UAE and the UK, we are excited to observe this development, which reflects the commitment of the country towards establishing a warm and academically invigorating atmosphere for students internationally.
A Resurgence by the Numbers and Local Mobilization
New Zealand’s Tertiary Education and Skills Minister remarks that between January and August 2024, New Zealand enrolled over 73,535 international students. This marks a significant leap in comparison to last year. Regions like Gisborne experienced an extraordinary 126% growth, with Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Waikato following closely with increases of 45%, 28%, and 26%, respectively. These figures contribute to the successful expansion of the international educational sector in the country.
Another significant statistic to take into account is that enrolments at universities are boosted by 14%, with 31,345 students currently engaged in higher education programs. Even schools have achieved a remarkable 33% growth, with primary school enrolments surging by 69%. Private training institutions also thrived, registering an 80% increase in student numbers compared to 2023. These data hint at a recovery of the education sector in New Zealand.
The Role of Local Support and Government Initiatives
Apart from success in catering to the international student market, local support and government policies have driven the rise of international students. While both local institutions and Education New Zealand promoted this sector of education, it has set high quality on various academic and social supports for students. Education New Zealand (ENZ) and local institutions are keen to promote the country’s education sector and offer high-quality academic support to students. This has contributed to the diversification of student source markets and up to a 3% increase in enrolments from the US, Thailand, Germany, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.
New Zealand’s attractiveness has also been boosted by strategic initiatives like updated post-study work visa regulations and student welfare programs. These steps reinforce the education sector, provide international students with clear pathways to job opportunities, and assist with their integration into local communities.
Opportunities for International Students and Consultants
New Zealand provides international students with the right blend of high-quality education, cultural diversity, and career prospects. As study-abroad consultants, we see this growth as an indication of the country’s commitment to encouraging growth and talent.
This surge in enrolment gives consultants the opportunity to guide students toward the right programs and institutions. We also advise and highlight the benefits of studying in less traditional regions such as Gisborne and Marlborough, which can expand students' horizons in comparison to larger urban areas such as Auckland.
Emergence of New Zealand as a Global Hub:
Different source markets have assisted in the resurgence of New Zealand's education sector. According to a recent investigation from data specialists StudyMove, an estimated 70,000 international students registered in 2023, with the largest number acquiring places at universities. The most significant drop occurred in the number of Indian students, which declined from 17,300 in 2019 to 7,930 in 2023, as reported by the ICEF. Despite this, India has become the second-largest group of students.
International Consultants for Education and Fairs
China remains the biggest source of students, accounting for 64 percent of 2019 enrolments. Due to changing patterns, Brazil, traditionally a strong source market for vocational education providers, has slipped out of the top 10. These shifts shed light on New Zealand's ability to attract students from diverse fields and specialisations.
Way Ahead
According to statistics, New Zealand’s education system will witness sustained growth. The number of international student enrolments is expected to recover completely by 2025. This indicates the adaptability of the country’s education system and how the government is dedicated to fostering global alliances.
